Wethersfield is one of nineteen municipalities to receive a 2008 Connecticut Clean Energy Communities Award from the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund.
Michael DiCioccio, Christopher Shepard, Virginia Judson and Matthew Forrest accept the 2008 Connecticut Clean Energy Communities Award from the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund.
The Fund's Timothy Bowles said when announcing the award, "It is most encouraging to see the enthusiasm generated at a community level by citizens who are driving the demand for clean, renewable energy through the Connecticut Clean Energy Communities program. Now more than ever, it is imperative that renewable energy be embraced as a viable alternative to fossil fuels in an extremely volatile energy market."
Wethersfield has pledged to purchase 20% of the electricity for municipal facilities from clean, renewable sources such as solar, wind or hydro by 2010. Already 8% of its electricity comes from renewable sources. The Clean Energy Committee is working on installing a solar photovoltaic system on a municipal building and other initiatives to meet the target.
Residential and business CL&P customers can help by signing up for one of the Connecticut Clean Energy Options. If just 35 more choose electricity from renewable energy sources this way, then the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund will provide the town a free solar panel installation worth approximately $20,000 that provides low-cost electricity for years to come.
